Ederlezi House in Mexico Boasts a Red Zigzag Exterior by Práctica

Ederlezi is a house in San Pedro Garza García, Mexico, designed by Práctica Arquitectura in 2022. The residence is organized around a narrow plot and features a unique central courtyard that creates two distinct volumes. Its interior comprises rugged reddish tones, reflecting Mediterranean and desert landscapes. A zigzag pattern on the exterior façade aligns with heritage restrictions, integrating classic and contemporary elements. Emphasizing privacy while offering diverse experiences, the design connects users with the surrounding scenery.

Celebrating Spring with Design

The name Ederlezi reflects the Balkans and Turkey’s spring celebration. The design embraces this spirit, providing a contrast between lush greenery and the warm red tones of the walls, accents, and doors, aiming to sustain the season’s warmth and vibrancy all year round.

Grounding a Design in Context

Built on a very narrow plot within the historic center of San Pedro Garza in Monterrey metropolitan area, the project is organized around a sequence of volumes and courtyards rooted in a rational order.

A central patio divides the house into two distinct volumes that explore the possibilities offered within a small area by building up. The main volume has two floors and a rooftop terrace, while the second contains a designed living room, dining room, and kitchen in open space.

A smaller blue patio marks the perimeter of the property, with access to a quiet, green terrace for the main bedroom. A double-height guest bedroom with a mezzanine adds additional accommodation space to the house.

Exploring Mexican Architectural History

From the outside, the red zigzag facade and grounded white walls create a boundary between the inside of the house and busy urban life outside. They contrast with the vibrant, colorful interiors revealed in sliced-up and open sections of the house.

The layout features an elegant, tidy arrangement according to a series of squares. A more dynamic section repeats elements and turns them around in different directions and scales, playing with a combination of aesthetics, textures, and colors.

Balancing Modernity and Tradition

Although the house blends into its traditional heritage context, its particular volumetrics make it unused to any ordinary dwelling. Its layered pathways create mysteries and surprises and achieve privacy through a connection to the natural world.

Building a Home Full of Surprises

Through its design, the architects sought to represent clients’ memories of Mediterranean and desert landscapes.

Ederlezi was built to encourage a more intimate, unplugged lifestyle that brings people closer to nature and create a tiny world full of surprises to blur routine and enhance life quality.
