Nature-Inspired Design

The Cube by Fuse Architects + Builders sits nestled within a serene redwood grove. Serving as a guest house to the Las Cumbres Residence in Los Gatos, California, it combines simplicity with sophistication.

The project was completed in 2019, featuring Corten steel on its exterior. Illuminated acrylic bars form an abstract pattern, reflecting the organic layers of the redwoods.

“From this shared outdoor living space, the ‘Cube’ would serve as an artistic backdrop to this gathering place,” explained the studio.

An entry door seamlessly integrates within the structure, maintaining a focus on architecture as art. Once inside, large windows offer an expansive view of the Santa Cruz Mountains, drawing attention to the natural beauty.

Art Wall and Scenic Views

The interior features a large, pivoting door-wall adorned with inlaid mild steel, creating an abstract representation of local madrone trees.

“We designed a large floor-to-ceiling art wall/door to separate the living space from the sleeping quarters,” said the design team.

This wall not only divides the space but also adds a layer of artistic interpretation to the compact living area. The unobstructed corner view further enhances the cosy, immersive environment.

Blurring Art and Architecture

Fuse Architects + Builders prioritised a seamless relationship between the building and its natural surroundings. This approach blurs the distinction between art and architecture, with every design element carefully curated to complement its setting.

The shared outdoor area connects the guest house with the main residence, providing a communal space surrounded by the tranquillity of the surrounding landscape.

The Cube stands not only as a retreat but also as an artistic expression, framed by the redwoods and open to the expansive mountain views.
