The building’s floating, multi-axial concrete structure creates a series of seating areas on the roof, shaping the ground floor space as an extension of the lush, surrounding garden. With a focus on passive, low-energy design, the Canopy Garden project showcases the possibilities of sustainable commercial development in tropical climates.
About Tanatap Canopy Garden
Located in the heart of Bekasi, West Java, Indonesia, the Tanatap Canopy Garden is a breathtaking restaurant project that exemplifies the marriage of nature and modern architecture. Designed by the visionary team at RAD+ar, this captivating space was completed in 2022.
Moreover, the canopy garden celebrates its transparent and open condition. Consequently, the structure is nothing more than a floating, multi-axial pigmented concrete plate hovering above the lush garden. Additionally, the lightweight, shell-stressed structure creates a series of seating areas on the roof, which also shapes the ground floor as an extension of the garden.
Conquering Tropical Challenges with Passive, Low-Energy Design
Situated in the compact residential area of Bekasi, which experiences extremely high temperatures (35°C/95°F), the Tanatap Canopy Garden serves as a testament to the power of passive, low-energy commercial design in tropical, developing countries. Remarkably, the project proves that such a design can be both achievable and profitable, even in the face of challenging macro-environmental conditions.
Blending Indoor-Outdoor Living and Tropical Inspiration
The design of the Tanatap Canopy Garden is heavily inspired by the woven canopy of the existing tropical almond trees. Consequently, the color tones and open layout allow air to circulate throughout the entire unit, seamlessly blending the indoor-outdoor living experience. “We wanted the design to seamlessly blend the indoor-outdoor living experience and extend the view towards the expansive garden fields while remaining low-tech but acting as a bold background of the landscapes,” explains Antonius Richard, the principal of RAD+ar.
A Harmonious Blend of Spatial Levels, Lighting, and Integrated Furnishings
The visitor’s experience at the Canopy Garden is curated through a series of playful harmonies, including different spatial levels, natural lighting, color and shade variations, and integrated architectural furniture. Ultimately, the juxtaposition of the multi-axial pigmented concrete element and the translucent elements on both floors enhances the outward views of the tropical almond garden, creating an elegant gathering space that invites guests to pause, unwind, and relax.
