About Perth Museum

Revitalizing Perth’s City Hall

Mecanoo has breathed new life into Perth’s former City Hall, transforming it into the Perth Museum. This project honors the building’s storied Edwardian history while incorporating contemporary design elements. Completed in 2024, the museum stands as a symbol of architectural restoration, blending the old with the new.

A Journey Through History

The project began in 2017, with Mecanoo diving deep into Perth’s rich heritage. The architectural team recognized the potential of the dilapidated structure, once a vibrant concert venue. They approached the renovation like skilled artisans, balancing preservation with innovation at every step.

Innovative Architectural Interventions

A defining element of the design is the introduction of a Vennel, a symbolic passage that enhances connectivity within the museum. This corridor links the Main Hall and the Lesser Hall, featuring striking bronze doors crafted in Black Isle. This architectural feature pays tribute to Scotland’s craftsmanship and enhances the visitor experience.

Community Engagement Space

The transformation also includes the Lesser Hall, now a vibrant communal space comprising a café and event venue. By lowering the windows to the floor, natural light floods the area, offering stunning views of St. Johns Kirk. This design fosters interaction and makes the museum a welcoming hub for locals and visitors alike.

Showcasing Scotland’s Heritage

At the heart of the museum lies the Main Hall, which houses Scotland’s historical treasures, including the revered Stone of Destiny. Inspired by this artifact, Mecanoo designed a bespoke oak box to display it prominently. A meticulously detailed balcony encircles the hall, inviting visitors to explore and immerse themselves in Scotland’s rich national history.

In conclusion, the Perth Museum exemplifies a harmonious blend of historical reverence and modern design, creating a space that truly honors the past while embracing the future.
