About Islington House

This house extension and refurbishment in Islington adds an arched doorway and a cantilevered stair that extend the Georgian revival character of the original property. The brief calls for a larger ground-floor living area, with an open-plan kitchen, dining, and reception room, plus a new WC.

A bespoke stair introduces Douglas fir treads and stone detailing. By shifting its position, the design creates a generous double-height volume at the entrance to the house.

A study is placed in the existing loft area. New Velux windows in the roof slope bring natural light into the room, while adjusted floor levels help achieve acceptable ceiling heights on every floor without changing the roofline.

Lime plaster, marble, timber, and brick run through the interior and give the rooms a consistent material palette. The property sits within the Canonbury Conservation Area, on the southern side of St Paul’s Road, as part of a terrace of nine post-war rebuilt houses.
