About Second House
A Fresh Take on Culver City Living
FreelandBuck, a dynamic architectural team from Los Angeles and New York, has completed ‘Second House,’ a cozy yet stylish 1,500-square-foot (139 m²) home in Culver City. Tucked behind another home, it cleverly mimics the high roofs of its neighbor while wrapping around its own private courtyard.
Where Rooms Meet Sky
Inside, each room stands out as a clear block, linked to an outdoor spot, like welcoming entry spaces and a balcony. These spaces blend seamlessly, forming a connected living area. Inside, the floors switch from grey stone to white wood, signaling a change from outside to in. Staircases shine in red and orange, spreading color to the rooms as daylight shifts. High windows welcome in the sky, bridging the gap to the outdoors.
Simple Outside, Complex Inside
The home’s outer skin features custom panels that make it look like a solid block from afar. But up close, the shading gives a hint of depth, suggesting layered wedges rather than a single form. Unlike the open space downstairs, the upstairs bedrooms offer a quiet, enclosed feel, nestled in their own nooks.
This home strikes a perfect mix of clear, defined spaces and an open, flowing interior. It adapts to the changing light, air, and personal touches, always offering something new to see and feel.
