A Victorian Surf Shack by Hunter Carson Design
A Victorian Surf Shack is a beautiful ocean-view home located in Manhattan Beach, California, redesigned in 2021 by Hunter Carson Design.
Description
Victorian-era architecture may not conjure images of wetsuits and surfboards. But when Lynn Stone, cofounder of Hunter Carson Design, moved into the ocean-view home with ornate gables, canted bay windows and intricate wood details, she decided to roll with its design tide instead of fight against it.
Within the home, Lynn created a surf-inspired retreat without going overboard on the nautical theme. She emphasized its architectural elements with a clean, modern approach by painting them all white. Furniture brings a more sophisticated take to beach style without the fussiness: All materials and finishes are designed to be “bullet proof” to sand, wet bathing suits and stains. Details include a Kelly Wearstler chandelier that hangs above a 12-foot long trestle table surrounded by Verner Panton-inspired chairs. The main living area includes low-slung seating covered in outdoor fabrics, an organic driftwood table with Lucite base and pair of Mongolian sheepskin covered ottomans.
