Ribera Road: Maximizing Coastal Views in Eco-Friendly Home
Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects designed the Ribera Road residence, a modern vacation home in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, for a three-generation family. The house, completed in 2022, maximizes the coastal site’s potential with expansive ocean and valley views, an infinity-edge plunge pool, and a series of outdoor decks, creating a year-round, sustainable oasis for the family.
Embracing the Coastal Idyll: Ribera Road
Perched atop the dramatic Carmel-by-the-Sea cliffs, the Ribera Road residence embodies a harmonious fusion of modern architecture and its breathtaking seaside setting. Designed by the esteemed Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects, this contemporary vacation home was crafted as a serene sanctuary for a three-generation family seeking to immerse themselves in the region’s natural beauty.
An Outdoor Oasis
The home’s exterior seamlessly blends into the lush, undulating landscape, with a striking façade of warm sandstone and glass that frames the expansive ocean vistas. Oversized sliding doors and large windows invite the outdoors in, seamlessly connecting the living spaces to the serene infinity-edge pool and cascading decks that cascade towards the Carmel River estuary. An abundance of natural light and generous overhangs create a balanced climate, while the photovoltaic panels on the rooftop harness the sun’s energy, reducing the home’s environmental impact.

Effortless Entertaining
Step inside the home, and you’re immediately greeted by a spacious, open-concept living area that exudes a warm, modern sensibility. A tactile sandstone wall anchors the space, visually separating the boundary-free social zones from the private bedrooms beyond. In the living room, a plush sectional and sleek, sculptural armchair invite relaxation, while the adjacent dining area features a substantial wooden table and contemporary seating, ideal for elegant gatherings.
Culinary Oasis
The kitchen, a true heart of the home, seamlessly integrates with the open living areas, encouraging effortless interaction. Clad in rich, dark-toned cabinetry, the kitchen boasts a generous island with ample seating, providing a central hub for casual meals and lively conversations. High-end appliances and a minimalist aesthetic create a streamlined, efficient workspace, while large windows frame the breathtaking views beyond.
Serene Retreats
Venturing down the hallway, the private zones of the home come into focus. The primary bedroom suite offers a tranquil respite, with a soothing neutral palette and large sliding doors that open to a private outdoor deck. The en-suite bathroom continues the calming aesthetic, featuring a freestanding tub and a spacious, glass-enclosed shower. Additional bedrooms, each with their own distinct character, cater to the multi-generational family’s needs, ensuring that every member can find their own haven within the home.
