Reynolds Road: Side Angle Side Converts 1970s Rancher into Eco Home

Side Angle Side transformed a 1970s rancher in Austin, Texas, into a spacious one-bedroom home. Designed in 2023, Reynolds Road was remodelled to improve energy efficiency and suit the homeowners’ lifestyle. Additions like solar panels, Tesla backup batteries, and rainwater collection provide reliable energy, allowing the property to go fully off-grid, as during a recent ice storm when power was out in the neighborhood.

About Reynolds Road

This remodel of a 1970’s rancher involved converting a choppy 4 bedroom floor plan into a spacious 1 bedroom home. The goal of the project was to create a home that better suited the couple’s lifestyle, while also improving the overall energy efficiency of the property.
Throughout the two-year construction process, the homeowners lived on the property in a yurt, even during the polar vortex storm that hit the area two years ago. This experience inspired them to go fully off the grid, adding solar panels, Tesla backup batteries, and rainwater collection to the property in case of future power outages.
Thanks to these upgrades, the homeowners were able to go off-grid during the recent ice storm that knocked out power in their neighborhood. This innovative solution provided them with a reliable source of energy, even when the rest of the community was left in the dark.
