Description by Studio Benicio

Built almost entirely from concrete, this striking new home by Studio Benicio makes a solid statement in Concord, a suburb of Sydney. The low maintenance, contemporary four bedroom house has been designed to showcase the owners’ love for concrete and replaces the existing red brick cottage. “The clients, a family of four, own and operate a formwork business, which in turn has garnered them a great love and appreciation for concrete, and they wanted their new house to feature this throughout.” explains Ian Bennett from Studio Benicio. Concrete was an unusual choice for this suburban neighbourhood, but made perfect sense for the clients. Combined with white ALUCOBOND®, the home is crisp and will be virtually maintenance free. One way to reduce the scale of the house due to limited site size was to create an indoor/ outdoor space that works as one. A retractable glass roof over the outdoor area lets light into the space and allows for year-round use. In the interior, a black box seems to be cut out of the walnut kitchen and black bi-fold doors open out to the grassed rear yard. The mix of materials provides cutting-edge design paired with a comfortable and cosy atmosphere. The challenge was to design something quite contemporary, incorporate all items in the brief (which included keeping the existing pool), but to avoid any flourishes which would mean the home would not comply with building regulations – all on a modestly sized site.
