About Villa Tantangan

Nature Meets Architecture: A Balinese Marvel

Set on 6500sqm (69,965 sq. ft) of land, the villa overlooks the Indian Ocean, a serene river system, a local beach temple, and distant volcanoes. Given such a breathtaking backdrop, the Bali-based firm, Word of Mouth, wondered: how might they design in harmony with nature?

Merging Boundaries: Where Design Embraces Environment

In response to this challenge, the firm conceived “Landscaped Architecture”, a concept where nature and architecture intertwine seamlessly. By doing so, they aimed to establish a bond between the environment and the structure, and also cultivate a connection with the villa’s inhabitants. Organized around a central courtyard, the design introduces intimate spaces within while offering expansive vistas on the outskirts. Moreover, placing structures at varying land levels allows them to function as vast planter boxes. Topped with either lush vegetation or serene ponds, these “boxes” integrate the architecture into the surrounding landscape. Additionally, they provide cooling effects and assist in rainwater collection.

Sustainability: Crafting a Self-Sufficient Sanctuary

Considering its remote location, the villa’s self-sufficiency was a primary concern. To address this, the design incorporated various green initiatives. The segmented building forms promote natural airflow, easing the demand on solar panels and batteries. By sourcing mostly local materials, the project not only supported the community but also minimized its carbon footprint. Consequently, the material choices resonate with the villa’s locale, further fusing it with the lush surroundings.
