About Hillside Sanctuary

A New Home with Old Memories

Years ago, a sad fire took away a beloved home in the Appalachian hills. Wanting a fresh start, the owner came to Hoedemaker Pfeiffer. Instead of copying the old home, the team wanted to capture its heart in the Pacific Northwest. Inspired by the calm San Juan Islands, they designed two stone homes: a main house and a guest one. Both fit well with nature around them. They offer a cozy spot for friends and family and a quiet place for the owner.

A Cozy Spot with Great Views

The main home sits high on a hill with a great view of Puget Sound. There’s a road on one side and nature on the other. So, a strong stone base made sense. Two big stone fireplaces stand tall, with a big stone staircase in the middle. This setup divides the home into public and private areas. On top of the stone, there’s a wooden section. Its roof keeps out hot summer sun and also has solar panels. Big glass walls let in lots of winter sunlight. Also, special windows at the top bring in more soft light, making living areas bright and warm.

The Guest House: Built with Care

Building the guest house was tricky. The team started with a big stone tower in the middle of the space. This tower stands tall and serves as a key design feature. Next to it, the main door leads guests into shared areas. There’s also a bright staircase, lit up by big windows, that takes guests to the downstairs bedrooms. On the opposite side, a deck offers more stunning views. Then, there’s the dining area. It’s like a glass box surrounded by trees. Strong beams below keep it safe and steady. To protect nearby trees, the team used special walls that don’t harm tree roots.

Merging Old and New

With care and smart design, Hoedemaker Pfeiffer made a space that mixes old memories with the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
