About Letná Apartment

Creating an Open Space from a Multi-Room Apartment

Transforming a multi-room apartment into a single open space while still making the client feel like the rooms are separated was an interesting challenge. We used the existing structural and technical parameters of the apartment and exposed the reinforced concrete ceiling structure with ribs, giving the apartment a rawer character.

Flooring: A Key Element

The flooring was a key element of the concept – it was supposed to be uniform throughout the apartment, including the bathrooms and showers. After a static analysis, the client and I decided on a brushed concrete screed.

Inserting “Boxes” for Separation

To achieve separation between the private and residential parts of the apartment, we inserted “boxes” made of different materials and structures. The main dividing element of the space is a green scalloped box that hides the kitchen appliances and wardrobes.

Entrance Utility Room and Library

At the entrance there is a small utility room and two built-in wardrobes. One is recessed in a dark panelling that goes around the corner into a library. The other is located in a green box.

Kitchen, Bedroom and Master Bathroom

The kitchen features an island lined with patinated brass panels and a solid concrete countertop with cleverly hidden openings for bio-waste sorter. The bedroom is located behind the green box. It has three entrances, with the headboard using the existing massive chimney as a divider. There is a pass-through library between the master bathroom and the bedroom.

Dining Room and Visitor Bathroom

The other half of the apartment is without any divisions or partitions. There is space for a dining room with a living area and a small bathroom (with a toilet) for visitors, which is accessed at the vestibule of the apartment.

Surprising Views

The views created after removing most of the partitions are sometimes surprising, due to the interconnection of the many materials used in the apartment.
