About Balcones Residence
The Visionary Architect: Roland Roessner’s Legacy
In the 1950s, architect Roland Roessner left an indelible mark on Austin’s architectural landscape. While teaching at The University of Texas at Austin’s School of Architecture, he designed some of Austin’s boldest modern structures. His iconic house on Balcones Drive stands out with its pronounced cantilevered concrete balcony. This architectural marvel nestles atop a sweeping hill, with Camp Mabry gracing its backdrop.
Reviving Mid-Century Modern Gems
The new owners, initially unfamiliar with the mid-century period, eagerly immersed themselves in its allure. Subsequently, they enlisted a renowned firm, ensuring a meticulous and respectful refurbishment of this Austin masterpiece.
Preserving History, Embracing Modernity
The renovation journey soon highlighted the need to expand the home’s original blueprint. Yet, upholding the site’s authentic spirit and the historical building’s dominance remained paramount. Thoughtfully, new office and utility areas were added to the north, and guest rooms emerged to the south. These enhancements subtly blend with the main structure, offering a discreet street view. Now, the rejuvenated space encompasses 2,680 square feet (about 249 square meters), housing a main residence with one bedroom and one and a half baths, complemented by a two-bedroom guest abode.
