About Beyond Residence

Beyond: A Fusion of Modern Living and Elemental Architecture

Beyond is a contemporary home where modern comfort meets elemental architecture. Designed by SAOTA, it stands on Lion’s Head, integrating with the dramatic landscape.

The house emerges from a steep hillside, offering views of Clifton’s beaches and the Twelve Apostles. Its entrance on Nettleton Road, South Africa’s most coveted street, reveals four stories with hints of additional levels above. The lower levels house six spacious bedrooms, with three interlinking for a family suite. Also featured are entertainment spaces, including a spa, games area, and cinema.

Expansive Living at the Pinnacle

Principal living takes place at the top. This expansive, open-plan area includes a kitchen, bar, dining and living rooms, plus a winter lounge, study, and art studio on a mezzanine level. Glazed walls open to blend indoors with outdoors, connecting a garden backing onto Table Mountain National Park to a sea-facing pool.

The entrance façade aligns with Le Corbusier’s vision of architecture as a play of masses in light. The visitor’s journey through space and light draws inspiration from the Modernist movement. The upper living levels bathe in generous light, defining spaces with intersecting planes and materials.

Interplay of Light, Space, and Art

The house masterfully combines light, space, and materials, hosting a collection of contemporary South African art. The home-gallery blurs lines, featuring works like Paul Blomkamp’s tapestry and Porky Hefer’s “Blowfish” in the entertainment area. The interiors, crafted by ARRCC and OKHA, curate art to complement the architecture.
