About LSR113

Creating Functional Spaces for Thai Climate

Ayutt and Associates design (AAd) received a brief from their client that emphasized the importance of functional spaces in a modern, square-shaped house. The client requested a design that would stay cool in Thailand’s hot climate, with plenty of greenery and protection from sun and rain. AAd faced the challenge of incorporating modern architectural elements while suiting Thailand’s hot and humid climate.

Incorporating Traditional Thai House Layout

The design of LSR113 draws inspiration from traditional Thai house layouts, particularly the central courtyard on the ground floor. However, AAd sought to create a unique approach to this traditional layout, showcasing the versatility of architectural solutions.

Overcoming Site Limitations and Climate Challenges

The main challenge AAd faced was the small, rectangular site with limited space for greenery and ventilation. To overcome this, they designed a two-and-a-half-story house positioned along the northern border, maximizing southern open space for a garden, swimming pool, and lake view. AAd’s design addresses heat and rain concerns with a modern solution: the upper volume overhangs the lower one, providing protection from sun and rain while creating depth in the façades.

Modern Thai Spaces and Architectural Vocabulary

AAd’s second challenge was to create modern Thai spaces using contemporary architectural vocabulary, balancing the demands of the climate with the modern Thai lifestyle. The resulting house showcases the architect’s unique approach to answering age-old design questions.

Utilizing Tropical Modern Materials

LSR113 features tropical modern materials, including off-form concrete, local timber, stone, glass, and aluminum. The reinforced concrete structure supports a metal sheet roof with heat and acoustic insulation. On the ground floor, a flat concrete roof features a gravel layer to minimize heat penetration. Glazed areas punctuate the brick plaster walls, and white-rendered exterior facades reflect heat. Customized metallic-black aluminum extrusion strips installed vertically on the master bedroom’s wall create a modern feature and provide air buffer insulation for cooling during the daytime.
