About MJ House

The Rising Tide of Minimalism: Vietnam’s Perspective

Minimalism is a design trend making waves worldwide, and Vietnam is embracing this wave too.

Land scarcity coupled with population growth is causing living spaces to shrink. As a result, our residences now favor streamlined aesthetics in both color and form.

Symbiosis with the Surroundings: The MJ House

Nestled in the countryside, the MJ House stands distinct amidst small, time-worn dwellings. We’ve used white paint to craft a gentle juxtaposition between old and new. We’ve broken the house’s volume into smaller compartments, mirroring the surrounding landscape. This design approach achieves a harmonious interplay of modernity and antiquity.

Functionality Tailored to Family Life

Reflecting a typical Vietnamese nuclear family, the MJ house accommodates three generations: a grandmother, parents, and two daughters.

The minimalist house features three bedrooms. While these spaces share a similar design, personalized arrangements add a unique flair to each. The ground floor houses the grandmother’s room, designed for elderly convenience. The parents’ master bedroom uses white and wood as its primary palette, exuding an aura of orderliness and maturity. The daughters’ room features an energetic blend of green, pink, and white, which doesn’t disrupt the home’s overall elegant aesthetic. Catering to Vietnamese holiday traditions like Tết, where families and relatives gather, the living-dining-kitchen area can expand to host more than 20 people with a few mats laid out.

An Innovative Approach to Color

Although white, black, and grey color schemes can visually expand a compact space, we dared to experiment with different hues in the MJ House.

The journey began with mint green, establishing a base for the house’s atmosphere. We then alternated this with pastel pink, infusing the space with a lively ambiance. These contrasting colors, subtly muted, blend beautifully into a light, harmonious palette. We next introduced warm oakwood to add depth and warmth. A crisp white background completes the palette, imbuing the home with a sense of cleanliness and organization.
