About Made of Sand Retreat

Revitalizing a Devon Cottage: The Made of Sand Retreat

Studio Weave skillfully added a double-story timber retreat to a Devon stone cottage, revitalizing the family holiday home between London and the countryside. Nestled in the Blackdown Hills, Made of Sand draws its name from the area’s historic role as a local sandpit. Conceived for the clients’ family, friends, and artists, this retreat provides a serene space for connecting with nature and art. Clients Tom Baker and Natalie Silk chose Studio Weave to design an extension that harmonizes with the rural setting while adopting a contemporary style.

Merging Old with New

Replacing an old garage and workshop, the new 85 square meter (914 square feet) addition wraps around the original cottage. This design creates two interconnected L-shaped zones. Furthermore, Studio Weave reintroduced a path leading to the central entry hall. On the ground floor, a stainless steel kitchen and bedroom suite open to a wildflower meadow. Meanwhile, upstairs, the living area extends to the treeline, offering stunning views through triple-glazed windows.

Craftsmanship and Material Harmony

In Made of Sand, material choice and craftsmanship play crucial roles. Externally, Red Western Cedar paneling blends with the surrounding woods. Internally, a mix of clay, terracotta, brass, and Douglas fir plywood creates a warm atmosphere. Additionally, the retreat’s soundproofing and insulation promote creative freedom. The structure’s visible design reduces material use, showcasing local craftsmanship in details like hand-cut timber joinery and clay-curved walls.

Director Je Ahn of Studio Weave highlights the project’s blend of technical precision and natural elements. Natalie Silk and Tom Baker, the clients, appreciate the retreat as a peaceful and creative sanctuary, reflecting their deep connection to the area.
