Description by Jerry Kler Associate Architects
The existing roof was sliced from eave to eave in a long linear ribbon of glass so the colors of the sky would be reflected inside and provide a play of light and shadows throughout the day. The clouds and the ever changing sky are visible throughout the living and upper loft areas.
The entire project opened up the views and brought in natural light deep into the spaces while providing multiple living and recreation uses both indoor and outdoor.
The design of the addition was conceived as an arm of living space reaching across the site to overlook the pool and cabana area. There was one obvious point to break through from the existing residence and this was used as a departure point for the addition as it moved horizontally across the site.
The entire bedroom walkway was designed as a glass enclosed gallery connecting the existing house to the new addition. The roof was broken into 2 levels to provide a play of light and shadows throughout the day.
As construction of the addition was underway, with the foundations poured, the design was changed to removed 2 bedrooms and add a family triangle room which opened the indoor space to the outdoors with a deck overlooking the pool and cabana.
