About Elk Run

Embracing the Mountain Landscape

Nestled on a mountain slope near Telluride, Colorado, this house flawlessly integrates with the surrounding aspen forest while showcasing stunning mountain views. As visitors arrive through the aspen grove, they discover three distinct building forms that blend seamlessly with the jagged mountain peaks in the distance. The design adopts a strategy of rhyming, harmonizing with the environment rather than creating a stark contrast.

Influenced by Nature and History

Drawing inspiration from the mountain landscape and Telluride’s early mining history, the house features a palette of materials that emphasize its connection to the earth. The forms appear to rise organically from the ground, boasting a monolithic appearance with a fine-grained texture that becomes apparent as one approaches.

Transitioning from Exterior to Interior

The transition from exterior to interior reveals a shift in materials from metal to wood, while a minimal white palette on the walls and ceiling allows nature to take center stage in each space. The house’s design thoughtfully orients various living areas to maximize both privacy and stunning views. Bedrooms, study spaces, and bathrooms face the aspen forest and the hilly terrain for a sense of intimacy and seclusion. In contrast, gathering spaces for conversation and dining extend into the breathtaking mountain gorge, creating an immersive experience for occupants.
