About Imperfect Residence

Nelson Chow’s Freedom in Design

The couple enlisted Nelson Chow, a lifelong friend and esteemed designer, to transform their new Hong Kong home. Entrusting him with full creative freedom, they set forth three essential requirements: aesthetic appeal, functionality, and longevity.

Seamless Integration and Psychological Comfort

Chow proposed a dual-layered concept. First, the design would exhibit a visually uncluttered look, with every element seamlessly integrated into the architecture, rather than existing as separate, scattered objects. Secondly, it aimed to create a soothing atmosphere for the occupants, offering a tranquil oasis amidst the vibrant energy of Hong Kong.

The Power of Wabi Sabi

Drawing inspiration from the ancient Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi, the concept surpassed mere visual aesthetics. This philosophy honors the beauty found in imperfection, impermanence, and incompleteness, forming the foundation of Chow’s design language.

A Contemporary Translation by NCDA

NCDA artfully translated this philosophy into a contemporary aesthetic, marrying bold geometries with natural, unfinished materials. The design encourages the residents to embrace the beauty of imperfection and incompleteness, offering them an escape from the mundanity of everyday life.
